What I bring to a Military Ball
Certain moments — a memorial tribute above all — call for complete quiet or a single somber piece, not background music. I treat this as non-negotiable, not optional.
Most balls are planned by a volunteer committee, not a professional event planner. I coordinate directly with whoever is running point — no confusion about who to talk to.
For a Submarine Force ceremony, I built individual walk-up music for eleven different commands recognized that evening — each with its own song, timed to the exact second, including clean edits where the room required it. That's not a playlist. That's a script, built in advance, command by command.
The Process
Understand
I learn your ball's specific order of events, your branch's traditions, your Commanding Officer's preferences if any have been shared, and where the formal program starts and ends.
Design
I build the music direction and a written timeline that maps to your actual ceremony — including exactly where the music goes silent for the memorial tribute and where it needs to build toward the dance floor.
Execute & Adapt
On the night, I follow the ceremony's real pace — not a clock — adjusting in real time as speeches run long or toasts move faster than planned, without ever losing the room.
This was a formal military ceremony honoring 125 years of the Submarine Force — an Admiral, a Commodore, and senior Navy leadership in the room, alongside 600+ guests spanning every rank. The evening moved through the National Anthem and Colors, the invocation, a memorial tribute to submarines lost (the Tolling of the Boats), remarks from the guest speaker, dinner, and the official toasts.
The part that mattered most for the DJ role: eleven different commands were individually recognized and called to the floor that night, each with its own cued walk-up song — timed to the exact second, with clean edits built in wherever the room required it. That kind of precision doesn't happen the night of. It's built in advance, command by command, before a single guest arrives.
I also sourced and managed the sound system company and lighting company for the ballroom, and was part of the rehearsal dinner the evening before — so by the time the ball began, the pacing and coordination were already familiar to everyone involved.
